Program

Why does music move us so deeply? Why does it accompany the defining moments of our lives, bring us together and strengthen our sense of belonging? Beyond the pleasure it gives us, engaging with music – whether by listening, singing or playing an instrument – stimulates the development of our cognitive, emotional and sensorimotor abilities at every stage of life. Drawing on insights from neuroscience and psychology, and in dialogue with instrumentalists, this Laboratoire will explore the effects of music on the brain, the body and human relationships. It will shed light on its role in attention, memory, anticipation, emotion and interpersonal synchronisation, revealing music as a powerful force for development, connection and human resonance.

About

Scientific and musical interactions
Music represents a real crossroads between emotions and reason; is it an art? Or a science? The Laboratories straddle the boundary between two worlds, an open door into the factory of our emotions; and we are keen to hear your views, too. Musicians are joined on stage by scientists, to discuss, experiment and reflect for around 1h15, seeking to put a finger on those feelings which make each and every one of us unquestionably human.
