Ludwig van Beethoven is more than just a musician; he is a major cultural phenomenon. Having arrived in Vienna in 1792 to forge a musical career, he managed to establish himself as Europe’s greatest composer following Haydn’s death in the early 19th century. Since then, he has not only remained the cornerstone of the repertoire, but has embodied the Romantic myth of the creative hero better than anyone else, serving both as a model for our democratic modernity and as a standard-bearer for a wide variety of causes. These programmes, presented by the musicologist and conductor Adriano Giardina, will offer a historical overview, tracing Beethoven’s aesthetic, social and political impact over time. In addition, commentary on excerpts from his piano sonatas – performed by pianist Stephanie Gurga (17 October) – as a sort of laboratory for musical innovation, the composer’s hallmark, will shed light on the musical foundations of this influence.

Adriano Giardina est maître d'enseignement et de recherche en musicologie à l’Université de Fribourg. Auparavant, il a occupé divers postes à l’Université de Lausanne et à ce titre a enseigné à l’EPFL et à l’HEMU. Il a effectué ses études de musicologie aux Universités de Fribourg et de Genève. En 2009, il a soutenu une thèse de doctorat sur les motets de Tomás Luis de Victoria à l’Université de Genève. Adriano Giardina dirige l’Ensemble La Sestina, spécialisé dans l’interprétation de la polyphonie de la Renaissance et la musique contemporaine, de même que le Chœur du Pavillon, composé d’étudiantes et d’étudiants en musicologie de l’université
Musicienne polyvalente originaire des États-Unis, Stephanie Gurga se produit au piano, au clavecin, comme cheffe, maestro al cembalo et chanteuse. Artiste musicale internationale, elle se produit en Europe, en Amérique, en Asie et en Afrique. Elle travaille par ailleurs comme cheffe de chant, préparatrice de chœurs et accompagnatrice pour des maisons d’opéra et des chœurs. Stephanie Gurga est aussi organiste titulaire à l'Église Saint-Guérin de Sion. Elle se produit régulièrement en soliste et occupe notamment le poste d’accompagnatrice à la Haute École de Musique (HEMU) Vaud-Valais-Fribourg.
