A world-renowned Venezuelan pianist, Gabriela Montero offers an exceptional recital, dedicated entirely to a vibrant and intimate musical journey. Like pianist Alexandre Tharaud seen at the start of the season at Noda BCVS, Gabriela Montero is also recognised for her talents in improvisation – a quality that she incorporates in her concerts. This has nothing to do with what one might imagine to be Spanish but an authentic vision of Spain, sensitive, multifaceted, lived from within. From Padre Soler to Liszt, taking in Granados, Albéniz and Mompou, she weaves a sound fresco rich in contrasts. Far from all the clichés about Spain, this mosaic reveals a land of keyboards, lilting rhythms and poetic impulses. Here, we hear the echo of an interior landscape that Gabriela Montero explores with a wholly personal intensity, in the spirit of Vladimir Jankélévitch: “The sound is perpetually moving.” The programme, a genuine Iberian “book of hours”, joyously includes Baroque masters resident in Spain (Soler, Scarlatti), the great figures of musical nationalism (Granados, Albéniz), their 20th century heirs (Mompou, De Larrocha), and finally the passionate take by Chopin and Liszt. An untrammelled journey freely inspired by a bewitching repertoire, led by a rare artist, profoundly inhabited by the very act of music.
