Noda BCVS invites you to sway to the rhythm of the string section during an exceptional evening of music, in which elegance and passion intermingle with each stroke of the bow. In the spotlight, Festival Strings Lucerne, an ensemble with an international reputation recognised for its tradition of excellence, will share the stage with the extraordinary Pablo Ferrández – winner of the prestigious International Tchaikovsky Competition, hailed by French newspaper Le Figaro as the “new cello genius” (who is regularly seen performing alongside Janine Jansen). All of the composers on the programme – from Tchaikovsky to Shaw – take their inspiration from pre-existing music: influences cross paths, references rub shoulders. Tributes, rewrites, pastiches… Bruch transforms Hebrew melodies into poignant variations (Kol Nidrei), Tchaikovsky looks to Mozart in his Rococo Variations and his Serenade for Strings. Two contemporary composers, still at work today, also draw on musical memory: Caroline Shaw (Punctum) evokes Bach’s Lutheran Hymns and an old photo dear to Roland Barthes; Elena Kats-Chernin (Blue Rose) revisits popular airs from the Balkans. An evening at the crossroads between tradition and invention, where music becomes the thread holding the centuries together.
