Emmanuel Pahud, Noda BCVS’ Signature Artist for the 25-26 season, joins harpist Marie-Pierre Langlamet, his fellow performer at the Berlin Philharmonic, and the violist, Lise Berthaud, for a concert of chamber music on the themes of timbre and silence. Three instruments with strong inner lives: the harp, mysterious and aquatic, the flute, somewhere between sensuality and an otherworldly breath, and the viola, melancholic and deep. Three singular voices that, in turn, reveal themselves playing solo, before merging together in works from a refined palette of sound. French composers, of course, lie at the heart of this programme: Debussy and his famous Sonata, composed in 1915 in a moment of resurgent inspiration, Ibert and his Interludes with their Castilian accents, Ravel and his delicate Sonatine transcribed for the occasion, and Tournier, a master of the harp, with a solo that brings to mind hidden springs in the woods. Alongside them, English composer Arnold Bax’s Elegiac Trio, nurtured by his French influences, and two figures from contemporary music: György Kurtág, whose miniatures for solo viola sculpt the silence as if it were living matter, and the Swiss Michael Jarrell, a composer still living who teaches in Geneva, whose Le Point est la source de tout… – a piece dedicated to Emmanuel Pahud – offers a glimpse of the origin of breath and sound. This concert gives us an opportunity to delve into a world of sound of rare richness, in which each note becomes a trace, a sign, an intimate resonance. A moment in which time stands still, between well springs and star bursts.
