A Whole Story
From 1929 to 2013
A symbolic place in the city of Sion and the Valais, the Chandoline Factory is steeped in history and experiences.
Built by the self-taught engineer Daniele Buzzi (originally from Ticino), the pumped-storage power plant of Chandoline rose in the Valais landscape between 1929 and 1935. Regular operation began on November 4, 1934, harnessing the waters of the Val des Dix basin. At the time, it was one of the cornerstones of the electricity economy in French-speaking Switzerland. No longer meeting energy efficiency and production optimization standards, the plant closed in July 2013.
Today
Empty, yet not stripped of its majesty, the building sought a new future. A modern masterpiece of the dam era, its surface area and unique character caught the eye of the city of Sion, which saw it as a cultural and event-driven opportunity. Since 2020, the factory has enhanced Sion’s offerings with an infrastructure that had previously been missing.
